This was the third round of the Print Trophy competition of the season held on March 5th 2026. This round had “Open” and “Street” as themes.
For each image I had to choose a roughly defined “genre” with the added condition that each submitted image must have a different “genre”.
Anastasia
On the second day of my street portrait workshop with Paul Reid we were around Brick Lane and Anastasia was one of the models who joined us in the afternoon.
I selected “Portrait” as the genre . . .

There were 20 images in this Open Round and the score was 9.5.
Summary of judge’s comments
… there is a genuine warmth there with this young lady , it is a joyous look
… she is definitely wanting to be posing for you, and you have done her justice with this shot
… compositionally it works pretty well, I might think of taking a slither of the bottom but overall
… she has such a lovely face, and this is a lovely portrait

On Valerie Jardin’s October 2025 workshop in London I was leading half of the group in the light tunnel in Kings Cross.
I selected “Street” as the genre…

There were 20 images in this Open Round and the score was 7.
Summary of judge’s comments
… the author has decided to just give us a silhouette, the key then is the strength of the silhouette because obviously what you have got is a big block of black on the print and you have got to create some interest
… the first thing that I have to appreciate here is that the author has actually thought about the location of this person walking past and tried to capture between those two lines which I think is spot on
… again I think with the darkening down of the right hand side then you are again drawing our attention to the figure
…so the question then is how is there of interest in that figure? can we tell the nature of the person going past I suspect that it is woman, long hair, and a bag over the shoulder
… obviously we could do with a bigger stride to separate the legs as you start to loose detail
… so for me this has just not got enough in it for me to keep on looking at it
… I think it needs a bit more action from the figure to create that interest
