Open seas:
Times of passing ships:

Yesterday we had left Kirkenes to start the Southbound part of the Coastal Voyage and today our main stop would be at Hammerfest. The last evening’s display of Northern Lights were the main topic of conversation over breakfast.
My missed sleep finally caught with me and I missed ports overnight!
Mehamn – arrive at 1:20 am
Kjøllefjord – arrive at 3:35 am
Honningsvåg – arrive at 5:45 am

Out on deck
After my good night’s sleep I was out on deck early in the morning.

I think this is a mist bow.

MS Polarlys – 8:15 am

Melkøya – gas production plant – 10:30 am
Out on deck we had a presentation about the Melkøya LNG plant and the Snøhvit gas field. To accompany the talk we were served “energy coffee”.
The LPG plant is on an island. This is the view away from the industrial island.
Hammerfest – arrive at 11 am
Hammerfest was the key port of this day Southbound.
There was crush in the lobby as we all waited to leave Nordkapp to get ashore in Hammerfest.
We did have a looong wait before we could leave the ship.

We walked up and down the street and then headed back to Nordkapp.

Approaching Øksfjord.

Øksfjord – arrive at 3:50 pm
Lecture: Whales in Norway – 4 pm
A fascinating talk, but we missed the landing at Øksfjord!

Skjervøy – arrive at 7:30 pm

This was Skjervøy the last port before Tromsø.
We watched passengers leaving and the lady with her dog coming back onboard Nordkapp.
Evening meal
Havilla ship – 9:55 pm
This was not scheduled on the passing ship timings. We were out on deck but we didn’t find out the name of the ship…
Out on deck – 9:05 pm
Past the Explorer restaurant there is a large covered area on both sides of the ship with space heaters! Beyond is the large open rear observation deck. We usually went to the starboard area to wait for the next “event.”
Tromsø – arrive at 11:45 pm
Then we had our sight of the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø.
Nearly at the dock.
Day 9 started with the ship’s midnight visit to Tromsø. We retired to try and catch up on more sleep.
