This was the second round of the Digital Image Competition at Bracknell Camera Club in the 2025-26 season held on October 27th 2025. This was a themed round of “Differential Focus” with two images allowed to be entered.
After my two year hiatus from Bracknell CC my Digital Images images were entered in the club league of the competition.
Just Looking
While I was attending Camera World Live at Brands Hatch in August I noticed an example photo shoot taking place further along on the roof terrace. I was using my big zoom lens to capture the passing racing cars and it made a useful portrait lens for an image of the model and one of her audience.
Summary of judge’s comments
… a very popular technique, to use in television and film whereby the person in the foreground is out of focus and you are looking at the person and then you see the focus switch the other way
… it is very well done, really enjoying that she is framed beautifully around the edge , and what perfect positioning
… bright on the girl and on the arm here , perhaps maybe darken that down a little bit just to throw the attention into the centre of the picture
… but the technique is working and I am going straight to her eyes , I think perhaps a slight vignette would perhaps of taken me even more strongly into the centre
… again works very well, just a shame that have dropped the bottom of her elbow there
… but nevertheless a superb picture
Right foot forward
In June 2025 I went with David Rutter on a worksop from Trafalgar Square , Temple Underground, Blackfriars, Tate Modern and then the South Bank. When I could drag myself away from the punk band playing by Blackfriars Bridge, I took images of passers-by under the bridges’ arch.
Summary of judge’s comments
… I don’t know if they are dancing or just walking along the pavement, I get the feeling that it is perhaps the latter
… Your focus is very much on this right foot as it goes forward and then you got all these other people in the background , adding interest to the image but not interfering too much , this foot is right out
… that is the one that you wanted me to look at , the one going forward
… so in terms of the technique that is working very well indeed
… a simple picture nevertheless , quite bright
… but the technique is definitely pointing me towards that particular foot
